Ventura, Calif. Accounting Executive to Lead Community Associations Institute

The Community Associations Institute is pleased to announce the election of Gary A. Porter, CPA, as president for the 1998-99 term. Porter, president of Porter & Co. CPAs, Ventura, Calif., will lead the Institute during its 25th anniversary year as the nation's voice for condominium, cooperative and homeowners associations. Also elected to the CAI Executive Committee are Stephen R. Bupp, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, president-elect; Ellen Hirsch de Haan, J.D., vice president; William B. Hallman, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, treasurer; and Maryjane Moore, CMCA, PCAM, secretary. The Executive Committee's term of office is March 1, 1998 to Feb. 28, 1999.

Porter has provided accounting services to community associations since 1976. The author of 5 books on community association accounting and taxation and a past CAI Author of the Year, Porter has been the editor of CAI's newsletter, The Ledger Quarterly, since 1989. He is a founding member of CAI's Channel Islands Chapter, established in 1979, and has served as chapter director and treasurer. Porter is an active member of the CAI Accountants Committee and of a special CAI task force on information technology.

Steve Bupp is the founder of Condominium Venture Inc., a Greenbelt, Md., management firm specializing in condominium and homeowners associations. An active CAI member since 1975, Bupp was one of the first association managers in the country to earn the Professional Community Association Manager designation. He is a member of the CAI faculty and served as a content expert in the development of CAI manager education courses. Bupp was 1997-98 treasurer of CAI, served on CAI's Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1992 and was a founding member of CAI's Chesapeake Chapter.

Ellen Hirsch de Haan, an attorney with Becker & Poliakoff, P.A., Clearwater, Fla., is a nationally recognized expert on community association legal issues. She is a contributing editor to Common Ground™, CAI's award-winning bimonthly magazine. Her book, Aging in Place: The Development of Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities, will be published by CAI this year. Hirsch de Haan is a member of CAI's College of Community Association Lawyers and a CAI trustee since 1992. She served two terms as CAI secretary and has been active on CAI's Public Policy and Strategic Planning Committees, Public Affairs Council and in manager education programs. A past president of CAI's Broward County Chapter, Hirsch de Haan now sits on the board of the Suncoast chapter.

Bill Hallman, community general manager of Koewee Key Property Owners' Association Inc., Salem, S.C., has more than 20 years of experience managing resort and residential community associations. He is a past general manager of Canyon Lake Property Owners Association, Calif., named 1996 Community Association of the Year by CAI; Fairfield Glade Community Club, Tenn., rated one of the 99 best residential and recreational communities in America for vacation, retirement and investment planning; and Sudden Valley Community Association, Bellingham, Wash., named Tourism Business of the Year (Best Resort), 1987. Hallman has been a CAI trustee since 1994 and served on the National Board of Certification for Community Association Managers (NBC-CAM). He was an active participant in CAI's efforts to develop a nationwide manager certification program and was among the first Professional Community Association Managers and Association Management Specialists in the country. Maryjane Moore is partner/owner of Levin & Moore Community Association Services, Nashua, N.H., a consulting firm providing transition services, board education, management audits, dispute resolution, employee training, casualty loss reconstruction, reserve analysis and studies, technology consulting, mortgage loan origination and other services to lenders, developers, management companies, individual homeowners and common interest communities. A CAI trustee since 1994, Moore serves on CAI's New Ventures and Value Added Membership Task Forces. A frequent speaker and moderator at CAI conferences, she has chaired CAI's Education and Services Council and served on CAI's Task Forces on Manager Licensing and Project Hope.

The Community Associations Institute is a nonprofit association created in 1973 to educate and represent the nation's 150,000 community associations—condominium associations, homeowner associations and cooperatives. CAI members include homeowners, associations and the professionals who provide products and services to them.
