EDUCATION PROGRAM

In designing the 2013 retreat, we listened to you. We heard you say that you value time talking with one another and learning from your peers and colleagues in the industry. We incorporated your feedback in selecting the speakers and in scheduling more time for facilitated discussions.

GENERAL SESSIONS

Gain the Edge: Negotiating Skills for CEOs and Executives
Martin Latz | CEO, Latz Negotiation Institute
Pre-Retreat Session (optional)
Today’s competitive marketplace can be tough to navigate, making negotiation skills more valuable than ever.
Executives spend hours negotiating each day, yet few completely understand the strategies and techniques of effective negotiation. This session offers a proven, research-based strategic framework for approaching negotiations, allowing you to base your decisions not only on your own experiences, but also on the collective experiences of the best negotiators in the world and the most up-to-date research.

Martin Latz, founder of Latz Negotiation Institute, is a nationally acclaimed expert on negotiation strategy and tactics. Since 1995, more than 50,000 lawyers and business professionals from around the world have given his training programs and seminars the highest praise. He is the author of Gain the Edge! Negotiating to Get What You Want and is adjunct professor of law for negotiation at the Arizona State University College of Law.

Sales and Service Across the Generations
Cam Marston | CEO, Generational Insights
Not everyone likes the same type of sales style and the same type of service, and what your sales team doesn’t know about the four generations impacts the bottom line. Each age group operates with unique values and defines a quality sales or service experience in a unique way. What Gen X may like, Matures may think is rude. What Boomers view as building rapport, Millenials see as a waste of time. This energetic and engaging session explores the sales and services biases of each of the four generations and gives simple, easy-to-execute ideas for how to best work with each to increase sales, improve service and build relationships.

Cam Marston is the leading expert on the impact of generational characteristics and differences on the workplace and the marketplace. As an author, columnist, blogger and lecturer, he imparts a clear understanding of how generational demographics are changing the landscape of business. Marston and his firm, Generational Insights, have provided research and consultation on generational issues to hundreds of companies and professional groups for more than 15 years. His expertise has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, the Chicago Tribune, BusinessWeek,  Fortune,  Money and Forbes, as well as on Good Morning America and the BBC.

State of the Industry Report
Tom Skiba, CAE | CEO, CAI
Informed by community association volunteer leaders, professional managers, community management firms and companies that provide products and services to associations, CAI has a comprehensive picture of the industry. In this session, Tom Skiba reports on the challenges, opportunities and trends affecting community associations and their management professionals.

Tom Skiba joined CAI in 2002 after serving 17 years as a senior manager with KPMG Consulting Inc. During his tenure as chief executive officer, CAI has grown tremendously in terms of membership, influence and international reach. Skiba has spoken at dozens of international, national and CAI chapter events, providing insights into the community association industry and the public policies and other forces that influence its growth, reputation and future. He brings his experience and strategic expertise to the opportunities and challenges that face community associations and the professionals who support them.

The Road Ahead: Planning for the Health Care Law
Kevin Kuhlman | Manager of Legislative Affairs, National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, signed into law in 2010, requires employers with 50 or more employees to offer all full-time workers affordable and adequate health care coverage by January 2015. What does this mean for your business and what do you have to do next? This session focuses on how businesses across the country and in our industry are preparing for the law’s implementation. What should you expect from state and federal governments? What can you expect in the lead-up to 2015? Will health reform be merely an adjustment of current practices or will this require a major overhaul of how we serve clients and employees? This session has the answers.

Kevin Kuhlman is a manager of legislative affairs at the NFIB, focusing his advocacy efforts on healthcare issues with members of Congress. Prior to joining NFIB, he handled health care, labor, education and small business issues for Congressman Peter Roskam of Chicago. He started his career on Capitol Hill working as support and research staff for the Committee on Ways and Means, serving under Chairman Bill Thomas, Ranking Member Jim McCrery and current Chairman Dave Camp.

Professional Employer Organizations: Adding Value in the Community Management Industry
Brent R. Tilson | President and CEO, Tilson HR
As President and CEO of Tilson HR, Brent has primary responsibility for the strategic direction of the company. Brent is a certified public accountant and received his B.S. in Accounting from Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He managed his own CPA firm working with small to mid-sized firms, and then, in 1995, he founded Tilson, which has become one of the leading human resources outsourcing firms in North America. Both he and the firm have received numerous awards and recognition. Brent is recognized as a specialist in the human resources outsourcing and employee benefits field. He is a frequent speaker, author and educator. Brent developed the Quad IV™ business model, which is the cornerstone of Tilson's services and solutions.

Communication Skills: Presenting and Communicating as a CEO
Anthony Huey | CEO, Reputation Management Associates
How do you make sure your message generates the response you want? How will you stand out in the minds of your employees, clients and potential clients? Many times, it’s how you communicate and present information that makes all the difference. This session focuses on conveying your ideas with authority. From formal presentations to board meetings, you will learn the skills to make you and your team more effective leaders and communicators.

Anthony Huey is president of Reputation Management Associates, one of the top communications training and crisis consulting companies in the United States. With years of experience in editorial management, media relations, marketing communications and business strategy, his career includes tenures as a news reporter and editor, crisis management specialist and media relations consultant. His past client work includes advertising, public relations and communications initiatives for Eli Lilly, Nationwide Insurance, The Kroger Company, Victoria’s Secret, Deloitte, The State of Ohio and others.

The Changing Legislative and Regulatory Landscape:  CEOs Looking Ahead
Dawn Bauman, CAE | Senior Vice President of Government and Public Affairs, CAI
During 2013, all 50 states are in legislative session, and there are hundreds of bills that will impact community associations. Hear about the trends, unique cases and policy positions that you need to be aware of as a CEO. This session also presents a federal affairs update covering critical changes to laws and regulations affecting community associations.

Dawn Bauman is senior vice president for government and public affairs at CAI and has been a nonprofit executive for more than 17 years. She has served as CEO of the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association and executive director of the National Board of Certification for Community Association Managers. She began her career with the American Cancer Society and later built a successful association management company where she served nonprofit associations, including The ALS Association Arizona Chapter, Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations, National Society of Fund Raising Executives - Arizona Chapter, Arizona Association of Defense Counsel and Volunteers of America.
